From my very first experience with Native American Flutes I was awestruck by the captivating, evocative and moving power of the music they create. Since then I have become a very passionate supporter of this stunning instrument and my passion continues growing daily. I started playing the flute to find a part of me that I felt was missing. I have since found that part and much, much more. I decided to devote much of my life to this instrument after experiencing the profound healings that it has brought me. Words just cannot explain the magic you feel when you play your heart's song - it's like expressing your spirit but with music and in that moment you find oneness and purity, you become the song, just you the flute and the song exist in that moment. From this comes a sense of identifying with your spirit (the real you), pride and freedom, and your spirit soars and strengthens - that's my experience. My life’s journey turned towards flute making so I could help bring this joy and self healing into other people's lives. This eventually led to me journeying to North, South and Central America to study the flutes and music of these regions and to connect with indigenous and non-indigenous people who were keen to share about the flute and their culture. I met many great people who were on similar journeys, many are now good friends. I also experienced the enchanting landscapes and powerful spirit of these ancient lands. Through these and other experiences with this flute my life has been greatly enriched. The flute has brought me so many new experiences, opportunities and friends both overseas and at home here in Australia and I am very grateful for that connection. In my approach to fine Native American Style Flute making, I focus on being environmentally sustainable with the woods I use. A very high level of quality in sound and finish is very important to me and with my flutes that will never be compromised to compete in the market place. I explore and experiment but still stay true to the traditional aspects of the instrument and the philosophies of the Native American people and their ancestors, whom I honour greatly for such a sacred gift. Honing my knowledge, opening up new possibilities and sharing this knowledge with others keen to learn is also an important part of my journey.
The Native American Flute, a flute with its origins going back many thousands of years but one that has greatly evolved over the last 300 years, due to various reasons such as steel tooling and western influences, was resurrected from obscurity and possibly near extinction around 30 years ago. It is now going through a renaissance period as it has been carried into a modern and contemporary world and is now tuned in a modern style of tuning. There is a very strong movement throughout the World that is steadily growing and will continue growing as more people hear and experience this amazing instrument. I am very keen to see this instrument become more known and appreciated in Australia and to see people of this land experience the blissful pleasure for them selves playing their spirit song that I do when I play. This is an amazingly soothing and hauntingly beautiful melodic instrument, which by the way, is easier to play than a recorder. Some say this is one of the most evocative instruments in the World and definitely one of the most unique. This instrument helps to bring cultural awareness and understanding to the Native American people as well as being a fantastic tool of change to help mend past differences between all cultures, helping to bring true unity amongst all humanity and nature on Mother Earth. Since I began this journey many years ago I have honed my knowledge by studying with R. Carlos Nakai, Ken Light and others at RNAF in USA, the history and playing of the flute. I have also apprenticed to Tarnascan Native American Flute Maker Guillermo Martinez as well as been guided by many others whilst being self taught primarily a journey of 3 years itself before sharing company with Guillermo at his workshop in Modjeska canyon in California. I have always aimed to be a maker of the very highest standard and have often been called a perfectionist.
My whole career is devoted to flute making, teaching, performing and recording my music. I am an active member of the International Native American Flute Association as well as the Australian Association of Musical Instrument Makers Association. AAMIM.
There are many hours of fine work in my flutes. I believe that every flute must be made well enough to last many generations. When I make a flute I visualize it playing its part in helping the world by healing and bringing joy. I always let the flute tell me how it wants to be and we work together - it just flows, so all of my work is totally unique and different from the last. This keeps me focused, as I know that there will always be something new and it allows me to grow as a flute maker and artist; I love the surprise of it all and I also enjoy making custom orders to suit your particular tastes and needs.
It’s part of my mission honour our environment and keep in line with the philosophies and beliefs of the Native Americans and their ancient ancestors as well as being a catalyst for the forwarding of peoples personal and spiritual journeys, their support in turn allows my journey to grow.
