Spirit Song Flutes is very proud to offer you some of the best Australian tone woods and some foreign tone woods that suit flute making and are committed to sourcing them from the most sustainable and eco friendly sources. Great effort and time have been spent to find these supplies and to build these relationships, which we are proud to be part of. We know it would not feel right to support the logging of native forests that are already seriously mismanaged and in many cases quite illegally such as in Tasmania or Brazil and PNG.

All the wood I have available has a story that I am happy to share with you. Some is plantation grown on the sunshine coast like the Qld. Maple, Quon Dong and Silver Ash. The Red Cedar, Rosewood and Silky Oak were harvested from a property which has had many hundreds of trees replanted. Other timbers have come from retiring craftspeople or collected in commercial green timber salvage operations. Some woods have been offered to us such as the Euro Walnut, this wood may or may not be plantation it’s too hard to be sure but it was offered to me by people we trust and know well who support conservation and are against destruction of native forests, it ended up at auction after being mistakenly imported. Camphor is commonly cut down as a pest and widely available in Northern NSW. Myrtle, Blackwood and Sassafras and other Tasmanian woods are collected by licensed salvagers and sadly this would be wood chipped or burned if these people weren’t out collecting it and marketing it to Australian Craftsperson’s. Other timber that has been sitting around in dusty sheds and has not found a purpose as it often happens is considered eco-sustainable as we know it would rather be flutes. As good luthier wood is increasingly scarce we usually pay a rate from $2000 to $10,000 per M3.

Due to limited stock we can’t guarantee stock will be available in sizes for all flute keys or even in some woods due to lack of seasnoed timber being available so if orederin pease state two or more preferred choices. There will always be other great woods to choose as the range is always growing.
Standard Flute Woods- Included in Price at no extra charge.

These woods are currently in stock and are the main woods currently offered.

Australian Rosewood - Dysoxylum fraseranum. Medium density hardwood. It is a beautiful deep red timber, can also be lighter in colour. It has a distinctive rose-like odor from which it gets its common name. It makes great flutes with a lovely bright but slightly warm sound quality. This is highly scarce wood but I offer it as a standard wood because I have a stable supply and think it makes excellent flutes besides being attractive and a rare Australian icon.

Red Cedar - Toona Ciliata. A very attractive deep red soft to medium density wood with a very pretty colour and grain pattern. It is a great flute wood with a lovely warm sound like other cedars suiting Middle to lower keys. This is highly scarce wood but I offer it as a standard wood because I have a stable supply and think it makes excellent flutes besides being attractive and a rare Australian icon. Lovely aromatic smell.

Silky Oak - Grevillea Robusta. Pinkish to reddish-brown. With oak-like rays and silky luster. In its native environment Silky Oak is a rainforest tree along the coastal rivers of northern New South Wales and southern Queensland. It is now relatively rare in its natural state. It makes lovely warm tone flutes like cedar in Middle to lower keys. A great Aussie flute wood.

Legally Logged Eco PNG Rosewood - Pteracarpus Indicus. An awesome tonewood with amazing depth of tone suits all keys. Short lengths bought from a local Joinery which they have no use for due to length but are perfect size to make flutes, no companies who log this stuff or importers will be dealt with directly as this wood is endangered, and fortunately the Australian Government has just started to enforce the law in regards to the importation of the 40,000 m3 illegally logged in PNG that has been imported into Australia alone per year for many years.

Podocarpus and the Podocarpaceae were endemic to the ancient supercontinent of Gondwana, which broke up into Africa, South America, India, Australia-New Guinea, New Zealand, and New Caledonia between 105 and 45 million years ago. Podocarpus is a characteristic tree of the Antarctic flora, which originated in the cool, moist climate of southern Gondwana, and elements of the flora survive in the humid temperate regions of the former supercontinent.
